MARCH 2017

Read Across America

Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of beloved children's author Dr. Seuss.
In celebration of Read Across America and Dr. Seuss's Birthday, New Bridge Center had a special visitor! Dr. Seuss’s favorite character, the Cat in the Hat, came to NBC to read to the Kindergarten students. With their own special hats on, they thoroughly enjoyed hearing the Cat read his favorite story – The Cat in the Hat
. The Cat was really impressed with the students as they completed so many of the rhyming stanzas in the book. What a great way to begin this week’s Read Across America and celebrate reading together.   A special thanks goes to Mrs. Auriemma for bringing the Cat in the Hat to New Bridge Center!
Roosevelt School had Read Across America celebrations as well!  Mrs. Poole's class had a mystery reader, and Ms. Taylors's class read I Wish I had Duck Feet  and then made their very own duck feet!  Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!  See pictures below!

Math Carnival

The 6th grade hosted the Family Math Carnival night for the second year in a row, and it was a great success!.  The students were excited to feature international games, in honor of  continuing Multi-Cultural theme!  Participant Drew Mathews reports that, "The Family Math Carnival was amazing! Along with her math CREATE students, Mrs. Nancy Hafers brought math alive to the River Edge Community!  There were many games at it, such as Mancala, Blink, Set, Bloxorz, and Othello. Many students, parents (and teachers!) came to this  event. For 1½ hours, attendees played the many fun games placed around the gymnasium. Students might wish there was a Family Math Carnival every day!"

Author Yangsook Choi Comes to River Edge Schools

ESL Coordinator/Teacher, Monica Schnee, with the help of the PTOs, was able to arrange an author visit for grades K, 1, and 2 in Cherry Hill and Roosevelt Schools, as well as a district wide parent workshop. Choi is an accomplished author and illustrator. Her picture books include New Cat, The Name Jar, Peach Heaven, Landed, Nim and the War Effort, and Goodbye, 382 Shin Dang Dong. In her Kindergarten presentation, she read the students New Cat and then taught them how to draw a cat using the alphabet letters O, V, I, C, S, and U. In grades 1 and 2 she discussed her writing process. While discussing "Idea, Researching, and Writing" she demonstrated how she applied the process to writing The Name Jar, as well guiding students along a story path to create a large group story.  Pictures below capture the visit.

International Day at Roosevelt School

While International Day was held at Cherry Hill school in February, Roosevelt held their celebration on March 31, 2017. Different cultures' dances, dress, activities, games and languages were showcased and each country was spectacular!  Students visited countries such as India, Poland, Puerto Rico, and Japan!  Many students wore special clothing that represented their heritage! Thank you to the parent volunteers for arranging such an eventful day.

Chromebook Cousins Collaboration

Picture
This year's sixth graders are particularly enjoying Mrs. Garcia’s Spanish class; the soon to be graduates were eager to use their knowledge of the language in a novel way.  The level six students' broad Spanish vocabulary was shared with their first grade "chromebook cousins,” creating an exciting opportunity for the older students to apply what they have learned. Games, songs and student-made worksheets were bookmarked or technologically crafted for their first grade "students."  Using a bank of vocabulary knowledge, upperclassmen chose to apply familiar vocabulary with the little ones.  Primary children will practice a strategically selected category of vocabulary study: colors, numbers, days of the week or classroom items. The little ones participated in direct Spanish instruction tailored for first grade learners, by the new generation of teachers, the sixth graders, equipped with technological support.  Fluent, sixth-grade instructors cued, "¿Que dia es? "¿Que color es?," "Los números, uno a diez," or  "Objetos de la clase." The excitement  motivated next year's second graders who met the Spanish teacher and became familiar with some basics!  We shall repeat this debut event  soon!
