FEBRUARY 2019
Interdisciplinary Connections Parent Academy
On February 11th, Literacy Supervisor and Coach, Ms. Spiegel, Grade 4 Cherry Hill School teacher, Ms. Hrnciar, and Roosevelt School Grade 5 teacher, Ms. Church presented a Parent Academy entitled Building Interdisciplinary Connections Through English Language Arts. Please visit the Curriculum Page to view it!
During the evening presentation, information was presented about how students learn about interdisciplinary connections and how parents can help at home. Interdisciplinary teaching is an impactful way to meld skills in various content areas together. For example, Ms. Hrnciar presented an English Language Arts and Science integrated activity. Fourth graders practice researching and writing in various text structures by reading about sled dogs and their adaptations. Then, fourth graders Skype with Denali National Park to see the dogs in their natural habitat and learn directly from a park ranger. Ms. Church presented about how fifth graders craft an original historical fiction piece based on a specific time period and incorporate a blend of fiction and historical facts for meaningful integration of Writing and Social Studies.
If you’re redecorating or planning a trip, ask your child to help with the budget, scheduling, and planning. Read a recipe, measure, and cook a meal with your child. Reading about the stars? Head to the planetarium. Or, maybe you want to plan a “book-cation”, like visiting the Museum of Metropolitan Art after reading From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler!

International Day
Roosevelt School:
International Day was a huge success at Roosevelt School! Parents brought different countries right to the Roosevelt gym. Students and teachers enjoyed getting their passports stamped and visiting all the different countries. In the country of Philippines, students enjoyed playing a game called Tinikling. Students had to jump over two sticks, while the sticks were beat on the floor to a rhythm. Other students enjoyed beating the drum in Japan. It was a wonderful day learning about different cultures.
