DECEMBER 2016

Winter Concerts

President Gerald Ford once said, “Music education opens doors that help children pass from school into the world around them – a world of work, culture, intellectual activity, and human involvement. The future of our nation depends on providing our children with a complete education that includes music.”   The music teachers and their students made beautiful music at the Holiday Concerts at both Roosevelt and Cherry Hill Schools.  Ms. Kara Cuadra led the band in a variety of festive arrangements, while Mrs.  Kelly Dent, Cherry Hill and Mr. Brian Urban, Roosevelt directed the choral numbers.  Captions below share more of the events.

Science is important in everyday life!  There is not one aspect of daily living that science has not made easier, faster or better.  People rely on science for health, communication and transportation.  At a glance, Science is important for students because it:
  • involves a lot of communication with other people.
  • develops patience and perseverance.
  • teaches them about the world around them.
  • can spark in their minds that they, too, can help solve the world's big problems.
Because of the importance of science, the PTO arranged for a traveling science show from the Franklin Institute of Technology! traveled to Roosevelt School to bring science to life to the students! Traveling Science Shows was created with one goal in mind: to generate an enthusiasm for science that spills over into classroom and everyday life experiences!  Thank you to Roosevelt PTO for bringing science to life!

Author, Peter Brown Visits Schools

Author Peter Brown came to visit both Roosevelt and Cherry HIll Schools!  Mr. Brown is an author and illustrator of children’s books. His titles include New York Times bestsellers like The Curious Garden, Children Make Terrible Pets, and Mr. Tiger Goes Wild which were written by Aaron Reynolds, earned him a Caldecott Honor. In addition, Mr. Brown's first novel for kids is is titled, The Wild Robot. In the video at right, Mr. Brown demonstrates the process of how he illustrates his books.  Students got to ask the author questions about his books, and he was honored to entertain their questions!  Much thanks to the Cherry Hill PTO for organizing such an exciting visit!

Hometown Hero, Joe Maugeri

Little did a young, brash eighteen year old kid ever think he would be in the middle of what many historians called  “The Great Crusade” to save Europe, and eventually the world. That kid was Joe Maugeri, not unlike any young adult today, dreaming of a better life, the privilege to drive a car, find a job, and later, raise a family. But on December 7, 1941, the reality for many of those young Americans changed forever.  Joe, with the understanding and support of his parents and feeling the patriotic call to duty, enlisted in the US Army. By June 1944, Joe found himself amidst heavy enemy fire, landing in a Higgins Boat with his platoon on Omaha Beach, Normandy, France. Many of his fellow soldiers that day, and many more to come died defending the freedom of all peoples of the world, and the Constitution of the United States.

Recently, in remembrance of the 75th Anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, Pvt. Joseph Maugeri, US Army, paid a much-welcomed visit to the 6th grade classes at Cherry Hill School.  Joe is the beloved Crossing Guard of Cherry Hill School. Thousands of kids, some now with families of their own, have entrusted him to get to them where they are going safely, before and after school. The duty Joe completes daily at the age of 95 is just as important as when he was landing on that beachhead in 1944. His message to the class that day was simple: remember those who have fallen, honor those who have served, and look out for each other as fellow Americans.
Little did Pvt. Maugeri realize that his first “crossing” was long ago, in a land far away but duty still calls today to serve and protect. He is the first person to tell you that he is not a hero, but in the eyes of all River Edge residents, and especially to the Cherry Hill School community, Pvt. Joseph Maugeri is a true American patriotic, and cared for by all. Thanks Joe, we salute you!
