Ms. Langan, Ms. Taylor, Mrs. Adimando and their second grade students celebrated their informational writing unit with a State Fair! Students used multiple means, such as the internet, audio books and books, to research information about their given state. Students then wrote and printed out their state paragraphs. They presented all of their information during the celebration! Texas, Delaware, Georgia, Mississippi, Arkansas, Tennessee, West Virginia, Hawaii, Oregon, Indiana and North Dakota were among the states represented. The event brought reading and writing to life! Congratulations to all of the students! Below are pictures from the special event.
Penguin Visits Kindergarten at Roosevelt!

Kindergarten students at Roosevelt School recently "waddled" into the world of penguins! Jenkinson’s Aquarium might be located on the boardwalk in Point Pleasant Beach, NJ., but on April 12th, the aquarium came to Roosevelt School!
Since kindergarten students have been learning and writing about penguins during Writer's Workshop, it was a special treat that a penguin from Jenkinson's came to meet the students at Roosevelt! At Jenkinson's, the penguin exhibit is designed to promote awareness of the penguins, their habitats and conservation. Since the students didn't see the exhibit, the aquarium brought the exhibit to the students!
It was an amazing and unique visit which was paid for by the Roosevelt PTO

Arbor Day
River Edge Schools celebrated Arbor Day on April 27th. Students rehearsed and sang an Arbor Day song about planting seeds. This holiday started In 1854 when a pioneer, J. Sterling Morton, moved from Illinois to Nebraska. According to timeanddate.com, "He and other pioneers noticed a lack of trees, which were needed to act as windbreaks to stabilize the soil and to give shade from the Sun. Morton planted trees around his home and encouraged others to do the same.
On January 4, 1872, he proposed a holiday to plant trees on April 10 that year. This was known as "Arbor Day" and prizes were awarded to the counties and individuals who planted the most trees on the day. About one million trees were planted in Nebraska on the first Arbor Day. In 1885, Arbor Day became a legal holiday and was moved to April 22, which was Morton's birthday. In 1989 the official state holiday was moved to the last Friday in April. All states in the US now have an official Arbor Day, usually at a time of year that is has the best weather conditions for planting trees."
